![]() The Van Wert City Parks Department in union with the Clean & Green Planning Committee of the Van Wert County Soil and Water Conservation District, coordinate activities for April Clean & Green Team activities. Clean up for city parks, was held on April 4. A good turn out helped clean up public property throughout the city. Those helping included the York Commandoes, Boy Scout Troop #35, Venedocia Lads and Lassies, The Van Wert County Sheriff's Department and others. Arbor Day was celebrated on Friday, April 24 at the new South Reservoir off Peter Collins Road. Two trees were planted, honoring the City of Van Wert and Don Lippi, Water Treatment plant superintendent, for their work in providing clean water to city residents, as well as recreational activities. Iberdrola Renewables, a wind energy company, provided one of the ornamental Chanticleer Cleveland Select Pear trees. Men's Garden Club members, Marsh Foundations students, and Boy Scouts provided help in planting the trees. LET'S GET OUT...EXPLORE was held on April 25 at Rotary Park off Route 127. Youngsters turned out in force to celebrate the outdoors and learn some outdoor activities. Below is the information on the "Search for the Oak" Contest and The Big Tree Contest which focuses on the largest tree found in Van Wert County regardless of species. This search for the Big Tree will be ongoing throughout the year, with the deadline on May 29. Big Tree Forms can be obtained at the Van Wert SWCD, Jubilee Park office and this website. A link is provided below to download a form. "Search for the OAK" This year the Clean & Green Team is sponsoring a "Search for the Oak" contest. Contestants will "Search for the Oak" using weekly clues provided through the media and this website. The tree you will be searching for is located on a
public property somewhere in Van Wert County. If you discover where
the tree is located take a card provided in the box near the tree and
call to add your name to the drawing to win gift certificates from area agencies and Laurie's Landscapes.
Clue #1 - "I am a mighty oak, tall, strong and wide. You'll find me in the city limits; you often pass beside.
Clue #2 - " I started growth in pasture green, Where cows once grazed and mooed. But, things have changed, I haven’t moved; Sidewalks and houses now seen." 1. Clue #3 - "Just off the porch on southwest side, Year after year, after year, I proudly stand guard, Of my stone house and yard."
