The Easter Egg Hunt
held March 22, had to take on a different
form, but youngsters still enjoyed the event. Clean up for city parks, held March 29, had a good turnout of volunteers, with many organizations helping to do the job. Included are the Starr Commonwealth for Boys, Montcalm School for Girls, Buckeye Youth, Cub Pack #31, Boy Scout Troop #35, Team Wal Mart and the Van Wert County Sheriff's Depart. Many 4-H clubs do the job around the county, as well. Arbor Day was celebrated April 25 with a community tree planting ceremony held at 4 p.m. in Fountain Park, sponsored by the Van Wert City Parks Department. During the celebration The Van Wert County Foundation was honored. The festivities included the kick off of the Big Tree Contest, and the “Search for the Buckeye” contest. Starr Commonwealth for Boys and the Montcalm School for Girls helped with the event. Below is the information on the "Search for the Buckeye" Contest and The Big Tree Contest which focuses on the largest tree found in Van Wert County regardless of species. This search for the Big Tree will be ongoing throughout the year, with the deadline on May 23. Big Tree Forms can be obtained at the Van Wert SWCD, Jubilee Park office and this website. A link is provided below to download a form.
This year the Clean & Green Team is sponsoring a "Search for the Buckeye" contest. Contestants will "Search for the Buckeye" using weekly clues provided through the media and this website. The tree you will be searching for is located on a
school's property somewhere in Van Wert County. If you discover where
the tree is located take a card provided in the box near the tree and
call to add your name to the drawing to win gift certificates from area agencies and Laurie's Landscapes.
